Coffee Battles in the Chains |

As if the chains did not have enough to grapple over, it would appear
that the newest leg-up against the competition is based on a coffee
war. When McDonald's recently won a four-way "coffee taste test"
against its rival fast food conglomerates, the sandwich rivalry may have
temporarily taken a back seat while the chains focus on a new
competitive edge - gourmet coffee. New and creative premium coffees and
coffee-based drinks will be finding their way to the fast food menu
boards. Food for thought - with Subway looking to introduce pizza, it
makes us wonder if this is a sign of the times. Is it an attempt to
providing anything that the public may pay premium dollars for, or an
attempt to gain lost market share? Either way, on some level it will
always be an attempt to compete on the local level with the
independent pizzeria or roasters and coffee houses? Shouldn't the
chains try harder to improve their establishments and stick to
what they know? Nothing can compete against the local pizzeria for
piping hot fresh pizza and the local coffee shop goes to great lengths
to focus on it's coffee. The quick fix may be easy but, won't satisfy
like the real thing.
